Specials by Scott Westerfeld

This book also might be my favorite in the series so far. You can read my review of Pretties here.

Rating: [4/5]

***Spoiler alert!***

Summary: Tally is now a member of Special Circumstances. As if that wasn’t enough, she’s also a Cutter. Tally loves her new Cutter life with Shay, except that she misses Zane. Shay and Tally concoct a plan to prove to Dr. Cable that Zane can become a Cutter too. They covertly lead Zane and a group of Crims to the New Smoke, which has taken up residence in a different city. Unfortunately for Tally, her presence in this new city might just be enough to incite a war and change the entire infrastructure of pretty life.

Likes: I really enjoyed Specials. The author does an amazing job of keeping Tally’s personality consistent through the lenses of an ugly, pretty, and special mind. I especially enjoyed the moral undertones of the book. Freedom isn’t inherently a good thing. It’s what one does with freedom that makes it good or bad. I loved how the author resolved the plot while still getting this point across.

Dislikes: Specials was a little slow in the beginning. However, it definitely picked up about halfway through the book and just got better and better from there.

TL;DR: I would definitely recommend Specials to anyone who likes dystopian fiction or to anyone who’s a fan of the series. It won’t disappoint.
