Extras by Scott Westerfeld

This was a really interesting look at how technology helps shape a dystopia. You can check it out here. And please read the other books in the series first!

Rating: [4/5]

***Spoiler alert!***

Summary: Extras follows the story of young Aya Fuse, a nobody living in a city where reputation is everything. She’s looking for a story to make her famous, finding one in the form of a secret group of girls who pull tricks for fun, just like the old Crims. However, that story balloons into something even Aya didn’t expect. What she has now is a story filled with secret weapons, mysterious facilities, and unnatural creatures. This story not only boosts her fame exponentially, but earns her a visit from the most famous person in the city, someone who hasn’t been seen since the end of the Pretty civilization.

Likes: I loved this series. Dystopian books are a personal favorite of mine, and this series was a great example of an excellent dystopian series. I really enjoyed the dialects the author has developed throughout the books. It’s easy to pick up on and it makes the story feel more real. I also liked the new element the author added in this book, in the form of fame.

Dislikes: The only negative thing I have to say about Extras is the pacing in the latter half of the book. The story kind of dragged in the middle, before picking back up again at the very end.

TL;DR: I would recommend this series to anyone who likes dystopian or science fiction.
